Alanya greengrocer Şükrü Doğan has imported off-season fruit such as apricots, cherries and nectarines for pregnant women craving the fruit, according to Doğan news agency, or DHA.
“Expectant fathers do not have to go from one greengrocer to another anymore. As these fruits are imported, they are sold in small amounts, just for tasting, just to end the craving,” said Doğan, adding that pregnant women seemed to crave winter fruits during the summer and summer fruits during the winter.
For this reason, he began to import fruits to meet these demands, he said.
This winter, Doğan imported summer fruits such as cherries, apricots, nectarines and watermelons from South Africa, he said. The price for cherries per kilo is 100 Turkish Liras while the price for nectarines and apricots is 50 liras.
Although the prices are high, Doğan said he could not lower the prices because they were imported.
“We offer summer fruits to our customers even during cold winter days. The customer who sees the summer fruits on the counter is first surprised by the fruit and then by its price. But this offer is a great opportunity, especially for pregnant women who crave unusual, off-season food,” Doğan said.
One of the customers, Ayten Güngör, said she was very glad to find the off-season fruits in winter but added that she could only buy them in small quantities because of the high price.
