Known for his four-meter-long shoeshine box in Antalya, 38-year-old Metin Atlıhan has been shining shoes on Kazım Özalp Street since he was 8 years old.
“My greatest dream is to enter the Guinness Book of Records with a five-meter-long shoeshine box,” Atlıhan said.
Atlıhan has been shining shoes on the same street since 1980 and assumed a fixed location three years ago on Kışlahan Havuzlu Square. The shoe shiner said he was planning to obtain a specially built five-meter-long shoeshine box for the next tourism season.
Atlıhan said he loved his job and he never thought of changing it. “Earlier, I used to carry my shoeshine box on my back, but for three years I have been earning my bread with this box in my fixed location.”
Noting his present box had 160 paint boxes, with 80 on the right and 80 on the left, Atlıhan said: “As I use lights, my box looks very beautiful even during the night. It attracts the attention of both local and foreign people. They have a souvenir photograph taken with me. I provide the same service with the same price to everyone.”
Noting that he would continue doing the same job until he dies, Atlıhan said he was grateful to Muratpaşa Municipality for not charging him any rent.
