Much-criticized proposal on disabled Turkish workers to be abandoned

The government is set to remove a proposal concerning workers with disabilities from the omnibus bill still being discussed in Parliament after it drew extensive criticism.
Discussions late Wednesday at Parliament’s Planning and Budget Commission on the government’s proposal on workers with disabilities were host to a tense exchange between Labor Minister Ömer Dinçer and Lokman Ayva, a visually impaired deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP.
Ayva is known for his opposition to the proposal, which he claims will reduce the rights of people with disabilities. He said he felt as if an arrow had been stuck in his heart because he was obliged to talk about a proposal which triggers discrimination.
Dinçer, who himself has a brother with disabilities, in return said he felt sorrow at being accused of discriminating against others and added that he should not be blamed for the situation.
The minister then asked the commission to remove the draft bill from the omnibus bill, which is still being discussed by the commission.
Thursday’s commission discussions still continuing as the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review went to press late Thursday.
