Vatan

-- Highway officials responsible for accident

For the first time in Turkish history the Highways Directorate was found responsible in the first degree for a traffic accident that killed three, daily Vatan reported Friday.

Ahmet Ofluoğlu, an architect and engineer in Beykent University, started driving from Istanbul to the Black Sea province of Trabzon in 2009 with his two children and a friend. When the car skidded and rolled off a cliff in the province of Kastamonu, no-one witnessed the accident.

The car remained below the cliff for three days with the injured passengers inside. Ofluoğlu’s children and friend all died, while Ofluoğlu was hospitalized after the car was discovered and finally survived.

Experts from Istanbul Technical University, or İTÜ, who inspected the road found that it had been poorly graded and sealed and reported to the Highways Directorate that this was main reason behind the accident.

Following the submission of this report the Prosecutor’s Office asked for permission from the Governor’s Office to investigate the accident and opened am investigation into the officials responsible for maintaining the road.

“I did not demand anything. I just want justice. If I made a mistake in driving it would be stated in the indictment. But that road was really bad,” Ofluoğlu said.

The four directorate officials under investigation face prison sentences of 15 years.

Habertürk

-- TV soap brings railroad

A mistake in a TV soap opera became the harbinger of a new railroad, the daily Habertürk reported Friday. In “Yaprak Dökümü” (Leaves’ Fall), one of the most popular soaps in Turkey, a character named Şevket bought four train tickets to the northern province of Trabzon in the final episode aired last week. However, this caused criticism and mocking toward the scriptwriters because there is no railroad, and therefore no train services to Trabzon. Süleyman Karacan, general manager of the Turkish State Railways, or TCDD, joined the debate and told “Şevket” not to lose his tickets because plans for a Trabzon railroad are in the making. Karaman said the Trabzon railroad was the will of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey, and it will most definitely be completed. Karaman addressed the director, producer, scriptwriter and actors of the soap and said: “The tickets Şevket bought will be valid on the day train services to Trabzon begin.” Atatürk visited Trabzon in 1937 and said the revolution that created the republic aims to increase the level of civilization to a higher degree in Trabzon as with everywhere else. For that reason, it was his aim to see Tarbzon with a suitable port and railroad.

Takvim

-- Machine error causes babies’ heart to stop

When artificial respirators attached to five babies at Ankara’s Gazi University intensive care unit broke down at the same time the babies’ hearts stopped beating, leading to the death of one, daily Takvim reported Friday.

Türkan Akbay had been receiving treatment since the end of October in the intensive care unit at the Gazi Training and Research Hospital. According to reports, respirator machines keeping five babies alive broke down, leading to the babies’ pulses stopping. While four of the babies were saved by hospital staff, two-year-old Türkan Akbay died.

Türkan’s being hooked up to the machine was essential for survival, the report said. Her father, Ali Akbay, visited his daughter Wednesday, was reportedly informed that she died only thirty minutes after he left the hospital.

Ali Akbay said his family took Türkan to hospital two months ago following a doctor’s diagnosis that she lacked essential levels of vitamin B12, adding that nothing appeared to be wrong with her in her most recent tests.

Doctor Peyami Cinaz, chief of hospital staff, said the hospital would not accept responsibility regarding the baby’s death. “It is not possible that the machines were broken,” he said.

The Health Ministry has launched an investigation into the incident, the report said.
