Turkey’s main opposition Republican Peoples’ Party, or CHP, leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu is set to meet University Student Council representatives Monday to discuss a number of issues student communities want to address.
The student representatives recently met both President Abdullah Gül and the head of Turkey’s Higher Education Board, or YÖK, to illustrate a variety of problems students face.
The meetings were overshadowed by student demonstrations, protesting that the student council presidents attending the meetings did “not represent all students.” The demonstration outside the student representatives’ meeting with YÖK head Doctor Yusuf Ziya Özcan was interrupted by police and a number of protesting students were detained.
The student council representatives sent a letter to the Republican People’s Party, or CHP, Dec. 29, with the CHP setting the meeting with the leader to be held Jan. 24, it has been revealed.
In addition to a minimum of 13 student council presidents scheduled to attend the meeting, Kılıçdaroğlu has said he would also meet with representatives from protesting students.
Subjects expected to be discussed at the meeting include the headscarf issue, rector selections, academic education problems, and student protests.
