At least one person was killed and another eight wounded in an armed shootout Sunday near the capital of Russia's volatile Republic of Chechnya, according to a report.
A regional investigator said six soldiers, one policeman and a passerby were injured in a shootout at a checkpoint between Grozny and Argun, Russia’s state-owned RIA Novosti news agency reported.
The investigator said that five vehicles came under fire near the checkpoint. "A group of unidentified people in the afternoon opened fire from their vehicle ... at a checkpoint that is guarded by servicemen," he said, adding that the body of an unidentified man, suspected of being one of the gunmen, has been discovered near the checkpoint.
News of the incident comes days after a police killed four gunmen during a raid in Khasavyurt, a town the Russian Republic of Dagestan.
