One of the world’s most famous operas is set to open in Ankara on Monday.
“Tamerlano,” a three act show, scored by George Frederic Handel and featuring Italian text by Nicola Francesco Haym, portrays a struggle between Tartar Emporer Tamerlano and Ottoman Emperor Bajazet.
The opera performance will prove a difficult task for the artists, according to Mehmet Ergüven, producer behind the Ankara performance. “All our artists are working very hard. We know that it will be a hard task,” Ergüven told Anatolia news agency in a recent interview.
“Tamerlano” is one of the best examples of Baroque opera, he said. “This baroque era opera is the third Handel Opera to appear on Turkish stages,” Ergüven said.
“There are total of 39 Handel operas. However, among all of them “Tamerlano” is the most important because he wrote it during his most creative period. The other masterpieces written by Handel are “Julus Caeser” and “Sense.” Many people think it is only possible to see such Handel performances in Europe, but it is also possible in Turkey,” he said.
While the full opera lasts between 3 to 3.5 hours, the Turkish troupe is performing a shortened version of the performance that frequently appears on European stages, he said. “We realized that the time would be very long for Turkish audiences,” he said.
The shortened version of “Tamerlano” is currently also being performing in Berlin and London. “We stayed loyal to the shortened version,” Ergüven said.
The orchestra would consist of 22 musicians, with 6 soloists, and was being conducted by renowned maestro Allessandro Cedrano, he said.
The decor of the opera was designed by Nihat Karaman and the costumes by Sevda Aksakoğlu. The lighting design was coordinated by Emin Saraçoğlu, Ergüven said.
The opera has been performed throughout the world and is renowned for its fine arias. Among the opera’s most recent productions, it appeared in the repertory of the Los Angeles Opera in November 2009, featuring tenor Placido Domingo.
