A worker who unfurled a scarf bearing the emblem and name of Galatasaray archrival Fenerbahçe at the Türk Telekom Arena lost his job, daily Posta reported Wednesday.
During the visit of the Union of Clubs, a group of Super League team chairmen, to Galatasaray’s newly-built stadium on Tuesday, a painter unfurled a Fenerbahçe scarf, Doğan news agency reported. The security was quick to intervene, removed the scarf from the worker and ejected him from the stadium.
On Wednesday it was said the painter’s demonstration of affection for his club cost him his job. “He lost his job for simply unfurling a Fenerbahçe scarf,” wrote Cem Kerpiççiler in his column in Posta. “In photographs, two workers who were sweating for that stadium were posing, smiling. But security could not allow those workers even only five minutes of joy.”
“Unfortunately, a scarf led to a laborer losing his job,” he wrote, before addressing the Galatasaray chairman. “Are you comfortable now Adnan Polat? Was it too hard for you to go near the workers with Fenerbahçe Chairman Aziz Yıldırım and shake their hands? Was it too difficult to send a message of friendship on a day like that?”
Galatasaray will open its Türk Telekom Arena on Jan. 15 with an exhibition match against Ajax.
