Women workers face verbal abuse in Mardin

Women workers of the Kızıltepe Municipality protest verbal abuse.
Nearly half of the female street cleaners hired by the Kızıltepe District Municipality in Mardin province quit after one day on the job after encountering vitriolic verbal abuse from men in the streets, Doğan news agency, or DHA, reported Saturday.
The municipality made the decision to practice gender-blind hiring in every position to eliminate gender discrimination. Within the scope of the decision, the cleaning company hired 19 women as street cleaners, out of 120 total street cleaning workers. These women started their jobs with Deputy Mayor Şerife Alp and councilmen on Friday, cleaning the district center.
Eight of the women who were responsible for street cleaning on Atatürk Boulevard, Urfa Street and Uğur Kaymak Boulevard didn’t come to work on Saturday, citing the verbal abuse they encountered on their first day.
“They continually asked us whether it is women who are responsible for Kızıltepe’s cleaning. [They told us] the place of women is in their homes. [The men asked us if] these women wanted to put an end to men’s dominancy,” the women said.
Alp, from the Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP, said that the ones who reacted disapproved of women working on the street. “We will support our brave cleaning ladies, as they were on duty until the end of their shift.”
