University resource on Istanbul to be distributed in English

University resource on Istanbul to be distributed in English

“Şehir ve Kültür: Istanbul” (City and Culture: Istanbul), a resource book for courses on Istanbul at the city’s universities, will soon be published in English for foreign students, according to a cultural official.
Istanbul Culture and Tourism Director Ahmet Emre Bilgili said the book would be printed in English as requested by university rectors because of the rapidly growing numbers of foreign students studying at universities in the city.
“If we can introduce Istanbul in the best way to these students, they will promote us when they return to their countries. The book will be translated into English immediately and printed,” he said.
The “Şehir and Culture: Istanbul” project is supported by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency and the first course on the subject was taught Thursday by Hagia Sophia Museum Director Professor Haluk Dursun.
Work for the English edition will take two months, Bilgili said, adding that 3,000 copies would be printed in the first phase after which the books would be distributed to the heads of all universities to be given to foreign students free of charge.
Bilgili also said the book would be available online. “In this way, information about Istanbul will be shared with wider circles.”
“Şehir ve Kültür: Istanbul” was written by Dursun, Bilgili, Professor Artun Ünsal, Beşir Ayvazoğlu, Hikmet Barutçugil, Professor İlber Ortaylı, Professor İskender Pala, Professor Korkut Tuna, Professor Murat Belge and architect Sinan Genim.
