During the country’s school semester holiday, the BKM Organization will offer two events for children: “Pinocchio the Musical” and “Alaaddin On Ice.”
One of the world’s most beloved cartoon characters, Pinocchio will take the stage in Ankara, Istanbul, İzmir and Bursa between Jan. 28 and Feb. 20. The award-winning musical will hold its gala opening night performance in Ankara on Jan. 28.
Pinocchio, a legend over 129 years old, is a fictional character that first appeared in “The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi,” and has since appeared in many adaptations. Carved from a piece of pine by a woodcarver named Geppetto in a small Italian village, he was created as a wooden puppet but dreamt of becoming a real boy. The name Pinocchio is Italian for “pine eyes.”
The character is known for having a long nose that becomes longer when telling a lie. Geppetto gave him the name Pinocchio because it is an Italian name of good fortune.
The musical adaptation of this popular children’s story is a real visual feast. The audience will join Pinocchio on his adventures through an enchanting performance as he learns what it means to be human. Along the way, he meets a whole range of colorful characters including a wise old cricket, a fox and cat – the conniving pair of villains – naughty schoolboys and of course the beautiful Blue Fairy.
The musical will be on stage at the Ankara Arena between Jan. 28 and 30, at the Istanbul Congress Center between Feb. 2 and 6, at İzmir’s Karşıyaka Sports Center between Feb. 11 and 13 and at Bursa’s Atatürk Congress and Culture Center Osmangazi Hall between Feb. 16 and 20.
As part of a world tour that started this year and will continue for three years, “Alaaddin on Ice – Alaaddin and the Magic Lamp” will be performed on a huge ice rink set up at Maslak Parkorman.
The book “1,001 Nights” is a collection of stories gathered over thousands of years by various authors. “Alaaddin's Lamp,” “Sinbad the Sailor” and the “Tale of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves” are just three of those, told by the storyteller Scheherazade.
“Alaaddin on Ice” is a tale of the poor boy Alaaddin and his quest to win the hand of Princess Sharida in marriage. Unfortunately there are other suitors for the princess, and the Caliph, anxious to find a worthy candidate to marry his daughter, sets a challenge. Several foreign princes and Alaaddin set out on a quest to find Princess Sharida a gift that holds the most precious elements of her father's kingdom.
The story is based on what children love most: a fun, interactive and adventurous show with monsters, treasures, magic potions and a flying carpet. “Alaaddin on Ice” is rich in magic acts, stunning acrobatics, inspirational music and the highest-quality figure skating, staged to enhance the classic Middle East ambiance.
Artistic director Marc Forno and choreographer Jamie Isley have put together a fantastic children's show. With breathtaking costumes, choreography and music, the show will take the family on an unforgettable journey to an exotic faraway land.
Tickets for both performances are available at Biletix.
