President Abdullah Gül met with the head of Turkey’s top educational board Friday to pass along notes he took during a Thursday meeting with university students who have demanded the top body grant them more freedom.

The Turkish head of state met with student council presidents from 11 Ankara universities during a luncheon at Çankaya presidential palace Thursday to discuss their problems and issues.
According to media reports, student representatives talked to Gül about five main problems, detailing desires to be subjected to less violence from police forces, to see the fostering of a freer environment for students to use their democratic right to express their views, to increase the authority of student councils, to reduce tuition fees and to solve dormitory problems.
Gül took notes, assuring the representatives that he would personally follow the solution progress.
The president further told the students during the meeting to brainstorm solutions for the problems Turkey face, telling them to express even the most adverse ideas. In addition, Gül urged them to stay away from illegal organizations that take advantage of students.
