Some 750 coal miners in Manisa’s Soma district who received a New Year’s Eve visit from the main opposition leader have returned to work after a two day break, a written statement from the mine announced Wednesday.
The workers were sent on unpaid leave due to a production stoppage, CNNTürk’s website reported early Wednesday, following the failure of their employer Uyar Mining Company and Turkish Coal Enterprises, or TKİ, to renew a contract early Wednesday.
Rumors that the employees were suspended from work because of a visit from Republican Peoples’ Party, or CHP, leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu were inaccurate and there was no relation between the visit and the company’s failure to negotiate a new contract with TKİ, Uyar Mining Manager Hakkı Sevinç said.
“The workers will return to their jobs. Negotiations for the new contract are ongoing,” said Hakkı Duran, manager of the Ege Linyit Company, or ELİ, which runs the Darkale Coal Mine along with Uyar Mining. TKİ also said it did not want to victimize the workers.
