Marsel İlhan’s Australian Open campaign ended early after the Turkish tennis player was knocked out of the competition at the hands of Mikhail Youzhny on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old Turk of Uzbek origin could make little impact against the Russian, who is seeded 10th in the tournament, and was beaten 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Breaking İlhan’s serve twice, Youzhny sailed to a comfortable 6-2 victory in the first set, repeating the feat in the second set for a 6-3 victory. The two fought neck and neck for the third set, with the Turk forcing play into a tiebreaker. But with the set poised at 5 points each, Youzhny won a mini-break before acing İlhan on match point.
Youzhny sealed his straight sets victory in less than two hours.
That was the first time İlhan had started a Grand Slam without playing qualification matches. Career highlights for İlhan, who is 90th in the ATP rankings, include playing second-round matches at the Australian Open and Wimbledon last year, making him the first Turkish singles player to advance at a major tournament.
