Turkey’s 2.4 percent decrease in electricity consumption in 2009 due to the global economic crisis perked up in 2010 by 7.9 percent, according to official figures from the state-run Türkiye Elektrik A.Ş., or TEİAŞ.
Total electric consumption in December increased by 8.3 percent compared with the same month of 2009, according to figures released Wednesday. The increasing demand for electricity has been met mainly through hydroelectric power plants due to recent heavy rainfall and filled dams, the agency reported.
The figures said the total electricity consumption of 194.79 billion kWh increased to 209.38 billion kWh during the last year. In December, monthly consumption of electricity reached 19.50 billion kWh.
Turkey consumed nearly 17.34 billion kWh in January, 15.72 billion kWh in February, and 17.41 billion kWh in March, 16.25 billion kWh in April, 16.56 billion kWh in May, 17.11 billion in June, 19.34 billion kWh in July, 20.36 billion kWh in August, 17.11 billion kWh in September, 17.15 billion kWh in October, 16.30 billion kWh in November and 19.50 billion kWh in December last year.
During the year, the country produced nearly 210,181 GWh of electricity and imported nearly 882,500 GWh from various neighboring countries such as Iran, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
