Russia maintains double standards with Turkey when it comes to agricultural products, according to İbrahim Yetkin, chairman of the Agriculturalists Association of Turkey, or TZD.
Russia has removed five Turkish companies from its exports list for allegedly high levels of agricultural-pesticide residue on exports, Yetkin said during a meeting Sunday. “It also announced a “red alert” for another eight Turkish companies. Russia’s decision is not right.”
Turkey is among the world’s top five countries in fruit and vegetable production, Yetkin said. “Russia is not making the right decision.”
Russia currently cooperates with Spain and Brazil during fruit imports from those countries, Yetkin said, adding that it behaves different to Turkey.
Turkish agricultural exports to Europe containing the same level of agricultural-pesticide residue are not negatively targeted there, Yetkin said. “Thirteen companies that have been put on Russia “red-alert” list currently comprise 76.4 percent of Turkey’s total agricultural exports.” Turkey implements self-control in agricultural production, with agricultural pesticide only legally available at stores employing authorized technicians.
Commenting on the red meat price crisis in Turkey, Yetkin said the TZD was not hostile to importing meat. “We are not against imports. We suggest importing breeding animals and distributing them to producers in proper conditions. Customs duty imposed on imported meat may be increased to 70 percent, up from 30 percent, to make them more competitive,” he said.
