Renault was market leader in automotive sales, with 75,834 passenger car sales in Turkey last year, said the director general of Renault Mais, Turkish producer of the famous French carmaker, during an annual evaluation meeting Tuesday.
Turkey’s total passenger car market totaled 509,784 sales, İbrahim Aybar said, adding that Renault sales represented a 15 percent share in passenger car sales.
“Renault Symbol produced in the Turkish facilities ranked first, with 28,688 sales in the best seller cars list of 2010, followed by Fluence model in the third spot with 24,838 sales figure,” he said. The model was recognized as the most-sold passenger model of 2010 by the Automotive Distributors’ Association, or ODD.
Turkey registered 760,913 unit sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles last year, Aybar said, adding that Renault obtained a 12.5 percent share in the Turkish automotive market last year, selling a total of 94,943 units of vehicles.
But 2010 was a record year for Oyak Renault, according to Tarık Tunalıoğlu, director general of Oyak Renault, a Turkish carmaker co-owned by Oyak and French Renault.
“We produced a total of 307,000 vehicles in 2010, representing an 11 percent increase compared to 2009 production,” Tunalıoğlu said at the meeting.
Approximately a quarter of the number of vehicles produced were sold in the domestic market, he said. “We exported a total of 233,000 vehicles last year. Oyak Renault was the export champion last year.”
Aybar said preliminary figures indicated that 2011 would run in parallel with 2010. “We forecast that we may experience a market this year of sales figures varying between 750,000 and 760,000.”
"As Renault, we are more assertive in sales this year, compared to 2010 sales," Aybar said. “Last year we sold nearly 95,000 vehicles but this year we are aiming for higher figures.”
