The Saint Nicholas Museum (Noel Baba Müzesi) located in the southwestern town of Demre in Antalya hosted a record number of visitors last year.
The Saint Nicholas Church was constructed during the 4th century A.D. in the name of Saint Nicholas, who is also known as Santa Claus.
The building is now used as a museum and attracts scores of visitors, especially Orthodox tourists, and attracted a record numbers of visitors throughout 2010.
During the past year, a total of 442,514 people visited the museum, generating an income of 2,227,935 Turkish Liras. In 2009, 395,230 people visited the museum, providing revenues of 2,043,593 liras. The museum welcomed 4,971 people during December in 2010, generating 27,010 liras. In the December 2009, 4,450 people visited the museum, resulting in a 24,875- lira gain.
Visitors fascinated
German Jurgen Schaafer, who visited Saint Nicholas Museum, said there was a mystical atmosphere inside the museum. “I am impressed. My knowledge on Santa Claus and the information given by our guide overlapped. This building which is the common heritage of humanity is very well preserved.”
Belgian Annick Guezenwec said she was fascinated by the life story of Santa Claus. “The church building is very well-preserved and restored. I was very impressed by the fact that the pictures and frescos were very well-preserved and I was also moved by the information given by the guide.”
Berrin Balçık, a Turkish citizen who lives in France, said she was proud of Turkey and added that it was her first visit to the Saint Nicholas Museum.
