Oktay Ekşi, the former chief columnist at daily Hürriyet, resigned Tuesday from his post as chairman of the Press Council.
Ekşi had joined the ranks of the main opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, last week.
In his resignation letter, Ekşi said he had resigned from the post to completely fulfill the political duties to be assigned to him by his party and so as to avoid overshadowing the council’s neutral and independent identity with his entrance into politics.
The written statement released from the council said daily Cumhuriyet columnist Orhan Birgit had been elected to replace Ekşi, who had served as the council chairman for 22 years.
Ekşi was forced to resign from Hürriyet in November after he was accused of insulting the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, administration in a column he wrote.
His chairing of the Press Council had also been questioned by some circles who called for his resignation because of his participation in the CHP.
