Poverty in Turkey increased in 2009 compared to the previous year, according to a recent report by the Turkish Statistics Institute, or TurkStat.
The percentage of Turkey’s people living below the poverty line increased to 18.08 percent of society, or 12.75 million people, from 2008’s 17.79 percent.
The proportion of people living under the poverty line had been declining gradually since 2003.
Food poverty, meanwhile, fell from 0.54 to 0.48 percent a year earlier, TurkStat said – the figure means 339,000 people cannot even meet food expenses. Food poverty is defined as the inability to obtain healthy affordable food.
Virtually no Turkish citizens live on less than $1 a day. The researchers calculated $1 as equal to 0.917 Turkish Liras according to purchasing power parity, or PPP. The number of people living on less than $1 dropped to 0.22 percent from 0.47 percent, TurkStat said.
The institute defined the daily poverty line at $4.30, according to PPP figures.
The starvation line for a family of four in 2009 was at 287 liras a month and the poverty line at 825 liras a month, TurkStat said.
A tripartite commission tasked with establishing Turkey’s minimum wage for 2011 announced on Dec. 28 it would raise the net monthly salary to 630 liras for those over 16 years old. The figure is applicable for the first half of 2011, after which it will be raised to 655.50 liras.
Rural population getting poorer
The research revealed that poverty was on the rise in the rural areas of the county while it was declining among the urban population.
The percentage of poor people in rural Turkey increased from 34.62 to 38.69 percent in 2008. The figure decreased from 9.38 to 8.86 percent in urban areas.
The TurkStat data indicated the likelihood of poverty increases in parallel with the number of people in a household. Just 9.65 percent of families of three or four were living in poverty, but the figure rose to 40.05 percent among households with seven or more members. For these crowded families, the poverty risk was 25.21 percent in cities and 54.06 percent in rural areas in 2009, according to TurkStat.
The poverty risk for children under 6 who have not yet started primary school stood at 24.04 percent.
