New year's wishes behind increased talk time on mobile phones

Subscribers benefiting from new year campaigns run by various mobile operators and Türk Telekom, Turkey's main fixed-line phone company, broke New Year’s Eve talking-time records in 2010, Turkish telecommunications industry representatives have announced.
According to data collated by Türk Telekom, New Year’s Eve calls from landlines to mobile phones increased by 210 percent, compared to 2009-10 figures, thanks to a special new year campaign.
Subscribers to Turkcell and Vodafone, Turkey’s two biggest mobile phone operators, contributed a total of 794 million minutes worth of telephone calls in the two-day period of Dec. 31 to Jan. 1 to convey new year’s wishes.
Turkcell officials announced that nearly 206 million minutes of conversation were logged in the period between midnight, Dec. 31 and 1.07 a.m., Jan 1. There were 285 million short text messages and 334,000 video messages sent in the same period. In total, Turkcell subscribers talked for nearly 419 million minutes on the phone and sent 461 million short text messages between Dec. 31, and Jan. 1.
Vodafone subscribers talked for 375 million minutes on the phone and sent 253 million short text messages during the same period.
