Mobile phone sales in the Turkish market rose 8 percent year-on-year in the first three quarters of 2010.
A total of 273,000 mobile phones were sold in the period, a sector survey conducted by GfK Turkey revealed.
Turnover in the mobile phone market rose 59 percent, reaching 1.423 million euros in the period.
The global surge in smartphone sales, which was also observed in the Turkish market, largely accounted for this growth, according to the research.
Smartphone sales constituted 14 percent of the global mobile phone sales and 16 percent of the mobile phone sales in the Turkish market. Smartphones accounted for 35 percent of the overall turnover in the Turkish mobile market. In fact, such sales in the Turkish market in the three quarters were more than two-and-a-half times the total smartphone sale between 2004 and 2009.
The survey also showed that mobile phone sales points have been losing market share, as giant technology retailers such as MediaMarkt, Saturn and others advance. The market share of traditional telecommunications stores dropped from 78 percent to 75 percent, while their share in terms of turnover rose 1 percent to 76 percent.
Technology retailers’ share in the market, in terms of the number of items sold, rose from 11 percent to 15 percent.
