Stepped-up police presence in Istanbul’s busy Taksim Square during New Year’s Eve celebrations Friday night resulted in the detaining of 22 people for sexual harassment and nine people in connection with three separate stabbing attacks.
One man was attacked in the Beyoğlu district square while trying to protect his girlfriend from being harassed; he was first hit in the head with a beer bottle and then stabbed in the leg. The suspect in the attack was among those detained.
Eighteen of the 22 people detained for harassment were sent to court. Five were released because police could not find their alleged victims, while 13 were arrested by the court Saturday, the Doğan news agency reported.
Overall, Istanbul police detained 88 people during New Year’s Eve celebrations, including two for trying to call people to obey Islamic rules and one for drug use.
Police officers worked through the night Friday in Taksim, with some disguised in Santa Claus outfits or as chestnut vendors.
In the western province of Manisa’s Salihli district, a total of 30 guns and rifles were meanwhile confiscated from the houses of several people who fired into the air during Friday night’s celebrations.
