Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze met with Azerbaijani President İlham Aliyev in Baku on Tuesday to discuss economic cooperation and regional security, according to reports.
“We have discussed those economic projects which are either being implemented or the implementation of which will start in the near future,” online news outlet Civil Georgia reported Vashadze as saying.
On Jan. 13, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Aliyev signed a joint declaration on the Southern Gas Corridor that call for long-term supplies of Azerbaijani gas to Europe.
“The president informed me about the results of Mr. Barroso’s visit to Baku. In this context, we have discussed future projects, which will unite the joint economic efforts of Georgia and Azerbaijan,” Vashadze said.
According to the EU-Azerbaijan declaration, the Southern Gas Corridor is “a stepping stone in increasing European energy security.”
During his two-day official visit to Baku, the Georgian foreign minister will also meet his Azerbaijani counterpart, Elmar Mammadyarov, and Transport Minister Zia Mamedov.
