Five Turkish officers were killed Monday night when a military helicopter crashed outside a village near Ankara, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement.
According to a statement on the military’s website, the UH-1 helicopter crashed during night-flight training, killing all five officers onboard. It added that an investigation had been launched into the accident, the cause of which was not immediately known.
Interior Minister Beşir Atalay said at a press conference Tuesday that a technical investigation into the crash was being coordinated by the General Staff.
Atalay said he was aware of suspicions that the crash might have occurred due to heavy fog but that final explanations for the accident could only be given after critical technical reports were completed.
The minister said he was not able to give minute-by-minute details regarding the timing of the incident and that the military investigation would provide more information.
Search-and-rescue teams found the wreckage several hours after communication with the helicopter was cut off, the Anatolia news agency reported.
The dead officers were identified as Army pilot lieutenants Şükrü Pürlü, Taner Erdoğan, Fikri Dilsiz, Erhan Gül and Kemal Taşçı.
