The Culture Forum Europa, which was established to introduce cultures to each other and develop relations between European neighbors, has presented its European Culture Award to a Turkish group for its cultural approach to breaking down national borders.
The “41 degrees - 29 degrees Istanbul” project coordinated by Esra Nilgun Mirze and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, or IBB’s, Culture, Inc. was awarded the prize at a ceremony held at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall before an audience of many well-known people from the Istanbul culture world.
“The innovative and modern approach that was put forward in the management of culture which breaks down national borders in the social and cultural fields, which removes historical and cultural obstacles, which creates awareness among the countries who are members of the European Union and the cultural ambassadorship that was undertaken with this project,” the citation for the award read.
Culture Inc. General Manager Nevzat Bayhan said at the ceremony that the organization had supported many alternative projects that were beneficial to Istanbul, adding that the 41 degrees - 29 degrees project in particular had revealed that Istanbul was an historical point of confluence in the alliance of civilizations.
Mirze spoke of how everyone who wanted peace and goodness to dominate in the world had to place especial importance on the role of culture and art, adding that the group’s goal had not been to have Istanbul occupy an important place in just European history and culture, but also in the Middle East and Asia.
The project was established in 2008 by Mirze and began operating in 2009. “41 degrees – 29 degrees Istanbul” aims to provide opportunities for different cultures to get to know each other through art and culture, and to contribute in this way to world peace.
