The first novel of a renowned British writer has been translated into Turkish 173 years after its original publication.
"The Pickwick Papers," the first novel written by Charles Dickens – famous all over the world for books such as "David Copperfield" and "Oliver Twist" – was originally published in 1837 and brought the writer great fame and fortune in his country.
The novel was translated into Turkish 173 years after its first publication and was presented to Turkish literature-lovers by Yapı Kredi Publishing.
Charles Dickens was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era and still remains popular. He was responsible for some of English literature's most iconic characters.
Many of his novels, with their recurrent concern for social reform, first appeared as magazine serials, a popular format at the time. Unlike other authors who completed entire novels before serialisation, Dickens often created the episodes as they were being serialized.
Dickens is famed for his depiction of the hardships of the working class, his intricate plots, and his sense of humor.
"The Pickwick Papers" was originally published in monthly installments from March of 1836 until November 1837.
Dickens' first book was a hit, with the first installment selling about 500 copies and the last selling about 40,000 copies.
The 906-page Turkish translation of the novel is being sold for 65 Turkish Liras under the title "Mr. Pickwick'in Serüvenleri."
