Democracy should be strengthened and steps should be taken on human rights and freedoms so that Turkey can become a modern country, Turkish State Minister Faruk Çelik said Sunday.
Speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Nostalgic Tram Line in the northwestern province of Bursa, Çelik said Turkey's current government took action rather than giving promises.
He said the government had displayed efforts to solve Turkey's problems and, thanks to that, Turkey had made remarkable progress.
"It is more important to act than to reiterate the words voiced 80-90 years ago. How can a country reach the level of modern civilizations? It is done by strengthening democracy and taking steps on human rights and freedoms. Otherwise, one cannot reach that level," Celik said.
"People tend to make mistakes under closed regimes. Once democracy, rights and law are expanded, these mistakes will diminish,” the minister said.
Çelik also praised the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP’s, efforts to make investments all around the country.
“We all saw the interest shown in President Abdullah Gül’s recent visit to Diyarbakır,” said the minister. “Why there was such a huge interest? Because the people have a thirst for service and this is how they thank us when they get it.”
Çelik also said there were plans for high-speed train routes that include Bursa, the province he represents in Parliament.
“We do not speak about what should be done, we just do it and that is what really matters,” he said.
