Baku police to crack down on jaywalking

Baku City Traffic Police have announced a crackdown on illegal pedestrian crossings in an effort to reduce traffic accidents, according to a report published Thursday.
Approximately 49 percent of last year’s traffic accidents were pedestrian accidents, Baku City Traffic Police Department's Public Relations head Vagif Asadov told online news outlet Trend.
A series of road inspections will be held throughout the city near schools, underground and ground junctions and pedestrian crossings until Jan.15 and pedestrians crossing the road at non-designated crossings will be fined 10 New Manats (a little over 19 Turkish Liras), Asadov said.
Pedestrians are not taking advantage of newly commissioned underground and ground crossings, but are instead crossing roads in areas where there is intense vehicle traffic, he said.
