The Aydın Doğan International Cartoon Competition 27th Year Exhibition has opened at the 75. Yıl Art Gallery in the southern Turkish city of Adana and will run through till Jan. 20.
As part of festivities pertaining to the 89th anniversary of Adana’s liberation from enemy occupation, the exhibition consists of 88 works, 15 of which have won a number of various awards.
In this year’s competition, 865 artists from 73 countries entered a total of 2,559 cartoons, and the competition was ultimately won by Turkish artist Ahmet Öztürklevent, whose work draws attention to the Palestinian problem and issues in the Middle East.
“I expressed it with my cartoon in a striking way. Which shows the power of cartoons. Cartooning is a concept with a very important function and a wide audience. In my cartoon, there is an image of the Wailing Wall. People worship are worshipping while at the same time soldiers are pointing their guns,” Öztürklevent said in October, 2010, when receiving his award.
Sergei Bobylev from Russia placed second and Kürşat Zaman from Turkey ranked third.
Winners of “Success Awards” at the competition included Musa Gümüş and Necdet Yılmaz (Turkey), Evzen David (Czech Republic), Vladimir Kazanevsky (Ukraine), Valentin Druzhinin (Russia), Mohsen Naseri (Iran), Gomez Claudio Antonio (Brasil), Jerzy Gluszek (Poland), Moacir Knorr Gutterres (Brazil), Mohammad Ali Khalaji (Iran) and Pavel Constantin (Romania).
The exhibition, which previously showed in Istanbul, Ankara and Muğla, will also travel to İzmir, Erzincan, Ordu and Balıkesir and is slated to appear again in Istanbul at the Caddebostan Cultural Center.
