A group of suspected outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, sympathizers attempted to immolate a statue of Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, on Dağkapı Avenue in Turkey’s eastern Diyarbakır province Saturday evening.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames before the statue was completely burned. The statue was not seriously harmed by the arson attempt. Once police arrived at the scene, the arsonists fled to the back streets and their trails were lost, Doğan news agency, or DHA, reported on Saturday.
The hooligans arrived at the statue at around 7:15 p.m.; they started small fires at the statue’s base with paper. Citizens nearby notified firefighters, who arrived promptly and extinguished the blaze.
The arsonists fled to the Suriçi district with the arrival of police officers. An operation to apprehend those responsible is ongoing.
