Oktay Ekşi, former chief columnist at daily Hürriyet, entered the ranks of the main opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, on Tuesday.
CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu presented Ekşi the CHP badge before addressing party deputies during Tuesday’s parliamentary group meeting.
Kılıçdaroğlu said Ekşi enlightened the public with his articles and they felt proud of his membership. Ekşi wrote independently and had even criticized the CHP, but his thoughts and pen were constricted during the rule of the Justice and Development Party, or AKP, Kılıçdaroğlu said.
“But you (Ekşi) will be free here,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.
In an address to the parliamentary group meeting, Ekşi said CHP membership was the most concrete expression of his beliefs and services he provided his readers during his journalism career.
Being a member of the CHP meant integration with the contemporary world and sticking to the principles of democracy and the law, Ekşi said.
Ekşi was forced to resign over a column he wrote that attracted accusations of insulting the AKP administration. Ekşi’s chairing of the Press Council has also been questioned by some circles who have called for his resignation because of his participation with the CHP.
