Çiller will not run for DP leadership amid calls

Former Prime Minister Tansu Çiller has said she will not run for the Democrat Party, or DP, leadership in the party’s upcoming convention on Saturday.
In a written statement Saturday, Çiller said she came to the conclusion that her name was not a uniting factor among the party’s grassroots and top figures. She will definitely not run for leadership under the current circumstances, she said.
Çiller’s statement reinforced current DP leader Hüsamettin Cindoruk’s position as the strongest candidate for party leadership.
The party’s 71 provincial chairmen will call for Çiller’s leadership at the convention, according to media reports Sunday.
Meanwhile, Ahmet Özal, son of former President Turgut Özal, said following Çiller’s statement that he will run for the leadership. Özal earlier said he would be a candidate if Çiller didn’t run at the convention.
